Business Etiquette Can Help Decrease Office Rage

October 27, 2006

Boston, MA - Take a look at the website www.annoyingcoworker.com and you will quickly see that rage is sweeping throughout Corporate America, and it has nothing to do with insider trading or executive compensation. People are sick and tired of working with insensitive and boorish office mates.

The site allows workers to send anonymous emails letting their co-workers know that their behavior is bothersome. Complaints on the site range from people who use their speakerphones to check voicemail and make loud calls in a cubical environment, to all sorts of personal hygiene issues, as well as the classics "please make another pot of coffee when you take the last cup" and "No, your mother doesn't work here - clean up your mess."

"Office rage is real, but it is subtle, and one of the reasons for turnover in many offices," says Gretchen Neels, President of Neels & Company - Strategic Business Communication. "With the unemployment rate so low, good performers know that they don't have to put up with an environment that is distasteful to them. If they seek out HR or management to help change an annoying situation and things don't improve, they walk."

Training can help in many instances. "Often, new professionals have never been taught how to behave in an office environment, and see their cubes as extensions of their dorm rooms," says Neels. "And sometimes, workers who have been on the job for a while can use a refresher on the dos and don'ts of office relations." Among other seminars, Neels & Company facilitates half-day and full-day training on "Business Etiquette 101". In this seminar, all the basics are covered, including hygiene, grooming, and professional conduct, in addition to helping people increase their confidence, engage at meetings and write appropriate and effective email.

Headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, Neels & Company provides corporate training in all areas of business communication.
